the foundations of health

hydration

water makes up approximately 60% of your total body mass, 70% of your brain, and 90% of your lungs. With statistics like this its no wonder why water has a profound healing effect on the body. Unfortunately, as a society, we are chronically dehydrated, which adds an unnecessary obstacle for the body to overcome each day. Hydration is key to winning the battle between chronic disease and optimal health.

movement

let’s face it- sitting is the new smoking. And we as a society are chronic sitters. We sit in our daily commutes to and from work, most of the day at work, and when we come home exhausted from the days events. Movement not only keeps our bones strong and healthy it also protects our cardiovascular system, improves mental health, energy levels, and chronic pain. Movement will be the determinant on how fast you recover from your health challenge- especially chronic fatigue syndrome.

nutrition

this quote couldn’t be more true. Just like prescription bottles are tailored to each individual, so must every nutrition plan. What is healthy for me may not be healthy for someone else, which is why my patients find all the nutrition information out there overwhelming. stress + rest

stress is necessary for everyones survival. It allowed our ancestors to run away from sabertooth tigers and initiates squirrels alarm system that its time to collect acorns for winter. Stress is only bad when it is chronically turned on. Learning to self soothe and return to the parasympathetic state is crucial to healing and repair.

connection

loneliness is one of the most potent drivers of inflammation. Studies are demonstrating how lack of community and physical touch negatively influence our health spans. FACT: Human beings are social creatures who need connection to survive. We cannot properly heal or stay healthy when we lose this essential life element.

biorhythm

the internal world of a human being is influenced by the beat of nature. Chronobiologists (biologists who study how the body measures time) have identified four body rhythms in human beings: ultradian rhythm, circadian rhythms, circamensual rhythm, and circannual rhythms. In my practice I focus on the last three and incorporate them into my patients health care plans for optimal outcomes.

Primum non nocere- First, do no harm. At the core of all medical fields and professions is the desire to assist the human form and condition. The least invasive non-toxic therapeutic actions are chosen first to restore health in order to minimize harmful effects. 


Tolle causam- Treat the cause. There is a time and place for symptom suppression. Naturopathic doctors primary goal is to identify the obstacles to cure and treat the root cause of disease to 


Tolle totum- Treat the whole person. Health and disease is multi-factoral. Understanding the interconnectedness between physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social and spiritual health restores balance. 


Docere- Doctor as teacher. The word “doctor” originates from the latin verb “docere",” which translates in English “to teach.” Naturopathic doctors are intended to educate the patient and emphasize accountability as the patient play san active role in achieving and maintaining health. 


Vis Medicatrix Naturae- Healing power of nature. . An abundance of healing can occur when we recognize and harness the body’s innate wisdom to heal itself, connect with nature, and use its natural medicines. 


Praevenire- Prevention. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” A healthy natural environment is the foundation of good health for one cannot heal in an unhealthy environment. Naturopathic medicine identifies potential areas of imbalance and helps take positive action towards health.

therapeutic order

The hierarchy of healing otherwise known as the healing process follows a distinct therapeutic order. Comprised of 7 layers, the therapeutic order is utilized based on the individual health concern, the severity of the condition, and other individualized factors. Rather than suppressing or managing symptoms, Dr. Mac works to identify underlying causes of illness and develop personalized treatment plans to establish the conditions for health. Once the health challenge has been identified, Dr. Mac uses the therapeutic order in a step-wise fashion to treat the root cause.
